I started recording again, and it was a disaster

It's the second week of September, and I did say in a past update that outside of content creation and recording, my focus this month would be TWO and Study Brew, the note-taking app for language learners.

Building is going fine, to a certain degree, until I discovered how flawed my SaaS build really is. Recording is where things really fell apart this week.

I want to get this down while it's fresh, not for anyone else, just so I have a reference for later. Writing is how I process, and it's helped me spot my own mistakes before.

Context and mistakes

My September plan was clear. I wrote about it more than once: polish the current MVP, work on Study Brew, then get back to recording, bedtime stories, and my personal journal first, followed by Echo Room. On paper, that looked fucking solid, and I was ahead of schedule. Then I hit a wall on recording.

My setup is simple.

A Rode USB+ microphone and headphones, GarageBand, and my custom dashboard that opens the stories in reading mode on my iPad Pro. Nothing fancy, and nothing that's changed since I last used it.

I started recording, and the moment I finished the first story, the sound was off. I'd forgotten to check the settings in GarageBand, and it sounded fucking horrible.

My audio was never perfectly crisp, but months ago it was a hundred times better than what I recorded last night. I couldn't figure out what had changed. No matter what I did, it sounded like I was recording from inside a cave.

Try, listen, delete, try again. I couldn't fucking bear it. I even opened an old recording in GarageBand, where my old settings should still have been saved, because nothing else had changed.

Same hardware, same mic, no upgrades.

Then I noticed GarageBand has a different feature now, so subtle I almost missed it. Before, I was using Apple's AUSoundIsolation plugin set to ninety percent.

Now there's also a High Quality Voice option, and I don't know what the difference is supposed to be, except that it's apparently a big fucking one, because that setting was defaulted on when I opened a new project, and it's what wrecked my sound.

One setting I had no idea existed ruined my entire evening. I was hours in, ready to record at least five bedtime stories. Instead, I recorded one story and a two-minute personal diary entry saying I was back, without even a script. You can listen to it right HERE.

Realizations

I felt comfortable with this setup. GarageBand is nothing fancy, and it worked fine back in March and April. But after a long break, I'm not as comfortable as I thought.

Even taking the bad recordings out of the equation, there's one thing I hadn't accounted for. I'd forgotten the workflow. The basic settings, the order of steps, all of it.

For a bit, I was so flustered about how to record. Neither of my first two recordings, the bedtime story or the personal journal, went smoothly.

I think my brain is just out of the loop. It takes a while before something becomes frictionless again, and right now I'm readjusting to a process that used to be familiar and is now half forgotten.

The whole flow, recording, thumbnails, avatars, distribution, isn't automatic the way blogging and building with Claude Code and Cursor is for me now.

It's almost the opposite. What used to feel comfortable now feels uncomfortable, and what used to feel foreign now feels natural.

Game plan

I took a breather and decided to give it a few days before going back in. Instead of jumping straight into ten-minute bedtime stories, I think I should warm up first, four to six minutes, and record a few personal audio journals before anything else.

The one I recorded last night had a few pronunciation mistakes. That's fine for a personal journal, but not for a bedtime story. I published it anyway, with a clear disclaimer, mostly to show I'm alive and still recording.

In a few days, I'll reset and go back in with a clear head and the right audio settings this time.

Final note

None of this is a big deal in the grand scheme of things. It's a settings menu, not a crisis.

But it's the kind of failure that reminds me how much of this is muscle memory, and how quickly that memory fades when you step away. I'd rather write it down now than pretend it didn't happen.
