Weekend rundown, because I did nothing on Friday

I was supposed to write my Friday rundown before the weekend, like I always do. But on Friday morning, I woke up and chose to do nothing at all.

I wasn't motivated for anything. And there was a practical reason too. The biggest feature of the Mac app, the editor, had eaten 90% of my weekly Claude limit by Thursday.

Doing the math

So I did the math. I wanted to keep the last 10% for emergencies. If something broke over the weekend, I didn't want to be stuck with a half-working editor and nothing left to fix it with.

Then I decided: fuck it. Today I'm going to doomscroll, watch a few cringe Chinese short dramas on my iPad, and take a long walk around the place I recently moved to.

The quiet out here

It's far more countryside than Taichung. The quiet, the silence, the farmland, the cool fresh air. It's so different from a busy city.

Caotun

In Taichung, a long walk means dodging scooters and waiting at red lights. Out here, I can walk past fields for a while before I realize I haven't heard an engine in ten minutes.

I didn't touch my MacBook Air the whole day, and it was liberating. It must have been the first time in over a year.

The aftershock

I think it was coming anyway. After the insane progress this week, and the moving and settling in before that, an "aftershock" was expected.

Moving homes, cutting projects loose, rebuilding an editor in Swift from scratch. None of it felt heavy while it was happening. It only hit once I stopped. A day of doing fuck all was overdue.

Writing less, and that's okay

The first thing I notice is that I'm writing a lot less than last month. I think that's okay.

Some months I can go on and on. Months like this one are more focused on delivering results: a Mac app, and content and recordings for my three English learning channels. Especially now that I see my early numbers "skyrocket" on Apple Podcasts.

Story valley new stats

The words didn't disappear. Most of them went into prompts, feature lists, and recordings instead of blog posts.

I'm ahead of schedule on all three channels, and I want to stay ahead. A buffer means one bad week doesn't break the upload schedule.

Study Brew had to wait

The one thing I wanted to do more of was push the Study Brew app for language learners. But my limits burned up so fast that I stopped early.

That one stings a little. The shows exist to point people toward the app, and right now the shows are growing faster than the app they're supposed to send people to.

Around 150 features to go

Now that the heaviest lifting on the Mac app is done (according to Claude), and I've planned most of the remaining 150-ish features in smaller pieces, I think I can launch an early version in the first week of November.

Unless I run into another draining limit. Which shouldn't happen, according to Claude. I'll take its word for it this time.

TWO Docs needs words

The one thing I lacked overall this week is content writing for TWO Docs. That's my number one item for Sunday. At least one blog post, hopefully two.

I was honestly a bit stuck on what to write. Unlike this blog, the TWO blog has to account a bit more for niche, SEO-ish topics. But I don't want to publish another standard tip or listicle that sounds lazy.

The internet doesn't need another "10 ways to organize your notes." And if I wouldn't read it myself, why would the people I want as customers?

Bloggers or writers?

But maybe, now that I think about it, I shouldn't start with writing. I need to re-evaluate my niche audiences and potential target markets first.

I do know who to target. But I need to narrow it down to one or two specific audiences, because that decides the type of content I write.

One is obviously bloggers. But I wonder if I should separate bloggers from writers. Writers aren't always bloggers, but bloggers are always writers, just with different motives, if that makes sense.

A blogger writes to publish. They care about where the words end up. A writer might never publish anything and still write every day, because they want a quiet place to put their thoughts.

Those are two different reasons to open a docs app, and probably two very different blog posts.

Last week, I wrote that I might narrow down the ICPs on the TWO website. Maybe this is that moment.

So maybe that's what I should plan first on Sunday, instead of writing?

Final note

Overall, I feel happy and recharged after a full day of doing nothing, and I'm ready for next week.

Besides making Sunday's ad hoc decision, I'll gather all my notes again and clean up some files before it gets out of hand.

The funny part is that nothing fell apart. The shows are still ahead, the Mac app is right where I left it, and the week still counts as a good one. One Friday off didn't cost me anything I can point to.

Next Friday, I'll write the rundown on Friday. Probably.
